The town of Metković is the administrative, economic and cultural center of the Neretva Valley. The second largest town in the Dubrovnik-Neretva county, it lies on the banks of the River Neretva and on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Together with its surrounding communities of Vid, Prud, Dubravica and Glušci, Metković stretches over approximately 51 km2,and in 2011 it had a population of 16 788. The area of the town ad valley is rich in diverse species of animals and plants.  The river as well as the proximity of the sea and the karst landscape have contributed to the formation of habitats for numerous species. The finest examples of the rich flora and fauna of the valley are exhibited at the Museum of Natural History in Metković. An interesting speleological site in the area is the Predolac pit (“Jama u Predolcu”), home to the rare cave shellfish Congeria kusceri. Other places of interest include bird reserves Pod gredom, Prud and Orepak, and the hillside of Predolac – Šibenica above the town, a favourite among hikers and nature lovers. The village of Vid, 4km outside of Metković, boasts a significant archaeological site and the Archaeological Museum of Narona, the first in situ museum in Croatia. It is a must-see place for all those who are interested in culture, art, history and archaeology. The town of Metković has a long history of churches. The first, original church dedicated to St. Elias was built by immigrants from Herzegovina, and in its place a new church was built in 1871 in neo-Romanesque style with Gothic elements. The prophet Elias is the patron saint of Metković and his day, June 20, is the day of the town fete. Many cultural and sporting events take place throughout the year: Festival of Neretva Principality, folklore festival “Na Neretvu misečina pala”, Metković Summer Festival, Roman Night, and the most famous Lađa Marathon. The varied traditional dishes and wines from the town are offered in numerous restaurants in town.
